Listen & Be Heard has hosted open mics on the east coast and west coast and starting on Juneteenth, in the Carolinas. In this episode we sample spoken word from all those places as we look forward to seeing what grows on Wednesday nights in downtown Greenville, SC. We feature the late Q.R. Hand jr., unofficial poet laureate of Vallejo, CA in the early 2000’s, speaking at a poetry marathon L&BH organized in protest to a proposal to build a liquified natural gas plant there. Also featured from the west coast, Jacqueline Scott Ramos, Yenia and Copus. From the east coast, poetry for Mumia Abu Jamal from the Black Lives Matter issue of A Gathering of the Tribes. From the Carolinas, Tony Robles, Tabitha and David Cameron. And from all those places, Martha Cinader reading from a journal made in China.

Jacqueline Scott Ramos
Jacqueline Scott Ramos is a poet, educator, movement worker, and public health researcher, born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission district—with roots birthed in the Philippines, Mississippi, the Chickasaw Nation, and Spain. Her life purpose is anchored in the Creator, the ancestors, her Mother, and commUNITY—the four pillars that sustain and preserve her hope to believe and fight for a reimagined just world that lifts collective liberation of all oppressed people.

Q.R. Hand Jr.
Quentin Roosevelt Hand, Jr. (1937 – December 31, 2020), known professionally as Q.R. Hand, was an African-American poet.
Q. R. Hand, Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is the author of three poetry books, i speak to the poet in man (jukebox press, 1985), how sweet it is (Zeitgeist Press, 1996), and whose really blues, new & selected poems (Taurean Horn Press, 2007). He was a member of the poetry and jazz ensemble Word Wind and worked as a community mental health worker in San Francisco, where he lived for more than four decades. He died on December 31, 2020.
He was the unofficial Poet Laureate of Vallejo, CA.

Tony Robles
Tony Robles, “The People’s Poet” was born in San Francisco and is the nephew of Filipino-American poet, historian and social justice activist Al Robles. He was a shortlist nominee for poet laureate of San Francisco in 2017 and the recipient of the San Francisco Art Commission individual literary artist grant in 2018. His two books of poetry and short stories, Cool Don’t Live Here No More – A letter to San Francisco and Fingerprints of a Hunger Strike (both published by Ithuriel’s Spear Press) take on the issues of eviction, gentrification and police violence in communities of color. He is also the author of two children’s books, Lakas and the Manilatown Fish and Lakas and the Makibaka Hotel, published by Children’s Book Press and Lee and Low.

Julia Wright
Julia Wright, daughter of the late, famed writer Richard Wright, is a veteran Black Panther who once accompanied Kathleen and Eldridge Cleaver to the Pan-African Cultural Festival in Algiers in 1969 and who has been working for nearly 40 years as part of the international campaign advocating on behalf of incarcerated journalist and veteran Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal.

In addition to Poet Royal Kent and Composer Wendy Loomis, the current instrumentation includes bassist Patrick Mahon, drummer Levon Washington, and an array of guest artists. COPUS has performed at festivals, jazz clubs, art galleries, private parties, charities and fundraising events throughout the United States.
