What?s Going on Around Here

There seems to be no shortage of activities at the height of summer here in Vallejo. This issue of Listen & Be Heard Weekly points the way to many of the things you can do with or without the kids this week and beyond.
Our calendar editor, Cyndi Combs, (who won an award at the fair for her poetry) works hard every week to seek out and assemble the best (and otherwise) in entertainment in Solano County and beyond. Out of all the calendars she pulls the best out and puts them on our highlights page, like a shortcut for those who have no wish to surf through our calendar section.
Coming up this weekend will be the 2006 Vallejo Pow Wow and the Battle of the Bands at the Chris Club. Of course there is also the Solano County Fair. Be sure to visit the fine arts exhibition. Our staff photographer S. N. Jacobson has already visited (and won an award in the photography competition). Be careful, if you look at his photos, you will certainly want to go and bring the kids. If you?re not into the fare at the fair, you may want to stop by the Good Day Caf? on your way, recommended this week by our restaurant reviewer Lanora Scott.
More fine art is on exhibition at the Evolving Art Gallery, where our art reviewer Irman Arcibal paid a visit last weekend in order to write about this special homage to Julius Hatofsky.
If it?s theatre you?re looking for, the Vallejo Music Theatre is currently putting on Fiddler On the Roof. Our theatre reviewer, Kirsten Lunde was there already, and recommends it to you.
In case all of that is too much for you, and what you really want is to quietly reflect on life and death and Vallejo?s past, you might want to follow in Sharon McGriff-Payne?s footsteps and pay a visit to the Carquinez Cemetery.
If you?re looking for a way to cool off in the heat, let it be known that we do have AC and great entertainment at Listen & Be Heard Poetry Caf?. Coming up this week, we have the Ovaseeahz CD Release party on Thursday night. Our featured poets are Annabelle Udo and Evalie Sales for the open mic on Friday. We have an acoustic jam on Saturday morning hosted this week by Karese Young, and of course Jazz with a poetry intermission on Saturday night. This Saturday we are featuring the BJ Papa Trio. As usual, we had the camera out this week. Here are some pictures to entice you to join us.
Of course you can also beat the heat at the movies. This week Cyndi is recommending some pirate fun and games.
Feeling indecisive? If you need a little advice on what moves to make, check in with Tony first for this week?s forecast.
After you?ve made your plans and executed them, please do write a letter to the editor, and let us all know how it all turned out.
Wishing each of you Peace and Poetry
Martha Mims, Editor
