SUGAR BABIES, TROUBADOURS & OPENING DAY

April 18 will be the opening night for the BENICIA OLD TOWN THEATRE GROUP presentation of “Sugar Babies” at the BDES HALL. This is actually a revival of sorts as the BOTTG originally performed this show 20 years ago. Done in the old Vaudeville and Burlesque style, this will be an evening of laughter and music. True to the genre there will be some language and adult themes. This production is the opening of the BOTTG’s 44th season. Tickets for the Opening Gala are $25. General Admission is $20, Seniors $18. April 19th will see a return of ANSTY MC CLAIN & THE TRAILOR PARK TROUBADOURS to Benicia. This performance will be at the HAYLEY HORN AUDITORIUM at the BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL at 8:00 PM. This visit by the quirky ensemble is being sponsored by the BENICIA/VALLEJO AAUW and proceeds will go to their Teck Trek summer program for Jr. High aged girls. General admission will be $25. April 19 is the Opening Day on the Strait. The BENICIA YACHT CLUB is geared up to give you a memorable celebration. The booths open at 10 AM on the MARINIA GREEN. The Annual Blessing of the Fleet and Decorated Boat Parade begins at 11:00 AM. The afternoon will include ceremonies, a rubber duck race, games, contests, dinner in the BYC dinning room and dancing in the Norton Lounge. All open to the public. For more info call 746-0739.

It is also Earth Day on April 19 and the FORREST DEANER NATIVE PLANT BOTANIC GARDEN in the BENICIA STATE PARK will be celebrating as members show off the results of their hard work. This garden is totally cared for by volunteers and the flowering native plants are at their best since the opening of the garden in 2003. For more info call 747-6204.

Wednesday, April 16 Acoustic Guitarists, SCOTT BURWELL and GORDON ROWLAND, will perform at the CAFÉ VOLTAIRE in the TANNERY BUILDING at 7:30 PM. Admission is $20 with funds benefiting MUSIC FOR CHILDREN. April 19 the performance will be repeated at the FETTERLY PLAYHOUSE FOR THE ARTS IN Vallejo.

Thursday, April 17 SYRIA T BERRY will bring his wonderful energy back to the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ. Come join the fun. He takes the stage at 7:00 PM. No cover. Call 745-1400 for more info.

KEN COOPER is a respected musician from the Diablo Valley area. He will entertain at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ on Friday, April 19. April 20 will be the next in the Spring 2008 Lecture Series presented by the MC CUNE COLLECTION at the JFK LIBRARY in Vallejo. There will be a free jazz concert at the BENICIA LIBRARY AT 3:00 pm ON April 20. The JFAO QUARTET accompanied by vocalist T RANISHIA GHOLSTON will present a program they have developed titled “The Origins and Development of Jazz”.

Ah, a true sign that winter is gone and good times are ahead! The BENICIA MAIN STREET CERTIFIED FARMER’S MARKET will once again grace First Street.. All your favorites will be back as well as a surprise or two. The Market is 4-8 PM along First Street from B to D Streets.

April 24 will once again bring Jazz at THE SHORELINE! The kick-off performance is none other than the DELBERT BUMP TRIO. Delbert is a master organist and teaches music at SOLANO COUNTY COLLEGE. April 25 GAYLA REITER will be holding an evening workshop in Past Life Regression at 240 Baker St. at 7:00 PM. This workshop is a fund raiser for SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME SERVICES OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. Pre-registration is required. Call 745-0105 for more info.

April 25 ABC MUSIC will be holding an Open House from 6:00 through 9:00 PM. STAN HOUSTON tells me they have completed their renovations and are ready for company. Also, STEF BURNS (a Benician and Lead Guitarist for Huey Lewis and the News) will be on hand to sign his newly released CD, “World, Universe, Infinity”. April 26 Benicia’s own PEPPINO D’AGOSTINO and Benicia vocalist MEGAN FREEDMAN will appear at the COPIA in Napa. This is a CD Release concert for Peppino’s 14th solo recording titled “Made in Italy”. The performance begins at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $20 at www.copia.org.

April 26 the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM will host a book signing at the Museum’s STONE HALL. DAVID VICTOR BOSSE JR. will be introducing his book, “Chi Chu’s Little Turtles” from 1:00 PM through 4:00 PM. David is a member of the Benicia City Staff. April 27 will be the 15th Annual Benicia Classic Car Show on the FIRST STREET GREEN. Proceeds will benefit the award winning BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL PANTHER BAND. Oldies music will be provided by BAY AREA ENTERTAINMENT. There will be special performances by the BENICIA HIGH JAZZ BAND. And, of course, there will be wonderful cars. April 28 and 29 THE VALLEJO MUSIC THEATRE will be holding its auditions for “The Music Man” . Children will be auditioned 7-8 PM and adults will be auditioned from 8-10 PM. The SUISUN MARSH NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION is putting out a call for volunteers to help with the more than 700 animals turned in to them each year. After training, volunteers can help with housekeeping and feeding of the critters in the association’s care. Don’t have time to volunteer? They need donations for food and cleaning supplies too. May 1 through 4 and again on May 9 through 11 NOUROT GLASS ART STUDIO will be holding its Annual Spring Sale.

May 2 will be the kick off date for FIRST FRIDAYS ON FIRST STREET. This program combines merchants, restaurants, and entertainment cooperating under the BENICIA MAIN STREET umbrella to make it a special night. For more info call 745-9791.

May 3 will be the fourth Concert of the 76th year of the VALLEJO SYMPHONY and DAVID RAMADANOFF‘S 25th Anniversary with the orchestra. This performance will be at the HOGAN HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM at 8:00 PM. They will feature David Mahler’s Symphony No 5 in C-Sharp. For more info call 643-4441.

May 3 and 4 will be the 15th Annual Benicia Artists’ Open Studios. Group Exhibits and Maps are available at ARTS BENICIA on Tyler Street. This event draws art lovers from all over the state to our little berg. Admission is free. Over 70 artists open their studios to the public. Many will discuss their process and offer original works for sale. This year the members of Benicia’s Plein Air Painting Group will be painting on or near First Street since their studio is the great outdoors. New this year will be an Open Air Landscape Painting Exhibit and Sale on Sunday, May 4 from 3:00 through 6:00 PM on Jackson Street (adjacent to the ARTS BENICIA GALLERY). ARTS BENICIA has many great ongoing and upcoming classes to put a little art in your Spring. May 6 Hearing Aid Specialist, RON JENKINS will hold an educational seminar on hearing loss at the VALLEJO MUSIC THEATRE at 6:00 PM. The seminar is in honor of May being National Better Hearing Month. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For more info call 554-6660.

May 10 the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS will be holding a Candidates Forum in the Council Chambers at CITY HALL from 10:00 through 11:30 AM. LOIS KAZAKOFF will be the moderator. The Candidates for County Supervisor, LINDA SEIFERT and JOHN SILVA will be there as well and pro and con advocates for Propositions 98 and 99. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. May 17 will be the Second Annual Benicia Founder’s Day Celebration at the CLOCKTOWER. The first celebration was a great success so the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM and the BENICIA/TULA SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION will once again host this event to celebrate Benicia’s Birthday. May 17 local Certified Hypnotherapist, GAYLA REITER will be joined by WALYER SEMKIW, M.D. as they present a Past Life Intensive Workshop at SOLANO COMMUNITY COLLEGE at 9:00 AM. The workshop will include two or more experimental sessions to explore your past incarnations using hypnotic regression. Bring a pillow, blanket or mat as well as a light bag lunch.
