BUSINESS OF THE YEAR, WHO CAN IT BE?

January 25 is the BENICIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 61st Installation Dinner and Business of the Year Awards. This wonderful event will be at THE CLOCKTOWER. Businesses often reserve tables as they wait to see who will be named Business of the Year. Cocktails start at 6:30 and dinner is at 7:30. Tickets are $57.50 per person . Black tie is optional. Friday, January 25 will be another DOUG HOUSER evening at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ. This local High School teacher will fill your evening with fun and your favorite songs. He takes the stage at 8:00 PM. No cover. Call 745-1400 for more info.

January 25 will be another evening of the spoken word at the LISTEN AND BE HEARD POETRY CAF√â featuring a book signing and reading of “Whose Really Blues” by Q.R. Hand jr. The fee is $5 but the first ten poets to sign up to read at the open mic get in free. Call 554-4840 for more info.

January 26 there will be E-waste Recycling at the BENICIA HIGH SCHOOL. Proceeds from this event will go to ease the cost of student trips coming up. So gather up those old cell phones, printers, monitors, etc. and haul them down to the BHS from 9:00 AM through 3:00 PM. They will even take toner and copier cartridges as well as VCR?Äôs P3 players, DVD?Äôs and CD players. There is no fee to drop off items, but donations are appreciated.

Saturday, January 26 will have OLIVER & HIS SWINGING PALS at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ. They play a mix of swing, jazz , country, Latin and other exotic numbers guaranteed to get your foot tapping. They take the stage at 8:00 PM. No cover. Call 745-1400 for more info.

Congratulations to CHRIS STRAWBRIDGE as she celebrates two years of serving Benicia in CHRISTINA S. It is a joy to see her flair and imagination on First Street. She is open late on Thursday evenings.

January 26 will be the 39th BENICIA LIONS CLUB Annual Crab Feed at the BDES HALL. No host cocktails begin at 6:00 PM with dinner served at 7:00 PM. They always have a wonderful raffle and a silent auction. Dancing to a DJ will follow. Admission is $40 per person. Be sure to get your tickets early because they sell out quickly. January 30 there will be an African Drumming Circle at the SUTTER SOLANO CANCER CENTER. These drumming Circles have been shown to boost immune systems, functions, and metabolism. The event is free for cancer patients and their families, however, reservations are required due to limited space. For more info call 925-933-0107.

BENICIA LITTLE LEAGUE is celebrating its 50th year of service to our community this year. They are looking for sponsors for the 2008 season. February 1-3 will be the 12th Annual San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival. There are events all over the Bay Area and for a complete list go to www.sfbayflywayfestival.com . Each winter hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese, hawks and even monarch butterflies migrate through the Bay Area. There will be constant events at Building 897 on Mare Island with free admission. Check out the web site to see which of the hundreds of hikes, bike rides, etc you would wish to participate in.

Thursday, February 7 the BENICIA-VALLEJO BRANCH OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW) will sponsor a FREE Women?Äôs Self Defense Class upstairs at the BENICIA VETERAN?ÄôS MEMORIAL HALL . The class will run from 7;00 through 8:45 PM. The first part of the program SGT. BOB OETTINGER of the BENICIA POLICE DEPARTMENT will present suggestions to protect yourself in public. Then SENSEI JIM aka JIM GALLAGHER will demonstrate techniques that may just help you in a difficult situation. The program is open to all women over the age of 14. February 8 will be the opening night for the VALLEJO MUSIC THEATRE production of Goggin?Äôs musical comedy ?ÄúMeshuggah-Nuns: the Ecumenical Nunsense?Äù. After a week at sea the ship runs in to a storm and many are sick including the cast of ?ÄúFiddler on the Roof?Äù (All accept the actor playing Tevye). The Captain of the ship comes to the Sisters and asks them to join Tevye in presenting a revue and then the fun begins. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 PM and Matinees are at 2:00 PM, The musical will run for 12 weeks through March 2. It is time again for the Annual Love Poetry Contest sponsored by the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM AT THE CAMEL BARNS. Participants are invited to be a part of the Valentine?Äôs Day celebration at the Museum.

The word is out that THE CIVIL WAR ASSOCIATION will once again hold its Winter Quarters Conference at the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM AT THE CAMEL BARNS on February. 9th and 10th. This is a great event for history buffs and the only Civil War Conference on the West Coast. Programs will be presented by historians and scholars focusing on both military and civilian subjects. Speakers are nationally known. Benicia residents DAN DEMPSEY and DR. JAMES LESSENGER will focus on the history of the bay area, the Benicia Arsenal, and the Camel Barns. February 9 will be the 41st Gala Anniversary Celebration for the CONTINENTALS OF OMEGA BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB. There will be a reception at 6:30 PM and a Banquet at 7:00 PM. CHERYL HURD of NBC NEWS will be this year?Äôs Mistress of Ceremonies and REV. CLAYBON LEA, JR. will be the Keynote Speaker. The event will be held at the MC CORMACK HALL at the SOLANO COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. General Admission is Adults $45, Seniors $35 and students (18 or younger) $25. Saturday, February 16 THE BLACK IRISH BAND returns to Benicia as the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM AT THE CAMEL BARNS hosts the appearance of this popular band at the Museum?Äôs STONE HALL at 8:00 PM. The band plays a repertoire of Irish, Italian, and American folk music in their unique style. February 23 is the is the 17th Annual Trivia Bee sponsored by the ADULT LITERACY AND ESL PROGRAM at the BENICIA PUBLIC LIBRARY. The event will be at the CLOCK TOWER as local ?Äútrivia toads?Äù gather to gain bragging rights for one year. This year the theme will be a Toga Party. You will enjoy dinner, music, a no-host bar, a raffle, and the trivia competition. Guests dress in costume to try and win the coveted ?ÄúSpirit Award?Äù. February 24 is the 12th Annual Gala Evening at the Academy Awards fund raiser for ARC-SOLANO. This wonderful event is usually sold out so be sure to get your tickets early. Beginning at 4:30 PM at the USA WORLD CLASSIC EVENT CENTER in Vallejo you have an evening of hord?Äôouevres, wonderful catered buffet dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, etc. All this as the telecast of the Awards Ceremony on a ten foot big screen. Tickets are $60 per person, but a table of 8 is $450.

There is an opportunity for poets to read their work on the air on KSVY FM. Every morning Monday through Friday, KEN BROWN , the host of the Mornings in Sonoma show will be playing recordings of poets reading their work at 9:00 AM. Respond by emailing jewel@vorn.com .
