Renaissance: Slave

December 21st, 2007 by bill vartnaw · No Comments

a huge crowd stood around David
instamatics & single reflexes flashing
‘look at the veins on his hand’
everyone had come to see it, to say it
to pay homage to this work of genius
it gave them faith in mankind
the experience was almost religious
-no one mentioned he was well-hung

the crowd was in awe
they saw what they came to see
their rush was not in vain
but in the vanity of their search
they missed the mirror

another ‘statue’: a man coming out of rock

his face strong & studied
the struggle was obvious. too obvious.
he was invisible to the crowd

the artist was naked
massive muscles of arms & legs pushed torso
             out of unsculpted marble
                    cold weight
everything I knew was in that marble
-the guidebook called it an unfinished work
