Artistic Adaption

November 7th, 2007 by s.n. jacobson · No Comments

The term adaptive reuse, most often used in the preservation of old buildings, has become a growing trend in local arts scenes. Empty storefronts in historic downtowns are being put to use, although temporarily, to show the diverse work of association and guild member artists throughout the country.

When the city of Fairfield and the local Goodwill store offered three months rent to the Fairfield Visual Arts association to keep the store open during the holidays, the Art Explosion Gallery was born. Opening in mid October, the spacious building has been the home of approximately 60 artists showing and, as I was told, 1000 pieces of art.

There are three monthly events to keep excitement high. I enjoyed and photographed the “Day of the Dead” artists’ reception. More information can be found at http://www.fairfieldvisualarts.org/ The gallery is located in downtown Fairfield at 821 Texas Street. It is open Wednesday- Saturday from 11am to 5pm.
