Thursday, March 22 you can witness the swearing in of Benicia’s first woman Police Chief. SANDRA SPAGNAOLI will be sworn in at 4:00 PM in the Council Chambers at CITY HALL. Thursday, March 22 there will be a new act at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ. RICK DIDIA and AIREENE ESPIRITU will bring their blend of blues, jazz, folk and bluegrass to Benicia Audiences. They have played New York venues such as CBGB’s and The Bitter End as well as many regional venues. Now it is our time to enjoy their talent. They take the stage at 7:00 PM. No cover. Friday, March 23 HUNTER AUSTIN is the featured poet at the LISTEN AND BE HEARD POETRY CAFÉ Open Mic poetry reading in Vallejo. The reading begins at 8:00 PM. There is a $5 fee, but the first 10 poets to sign up for the open mic reading get in free. For more info call 554-4540.

Friday, March 23 is once again DOUG HOUSER Night at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFE!. Our favorite local teacher can really rock the house while making sure that his audience has fun too. He often encourages the audience to sing along to their favorite tunes. Doug takes the stage at 8:00 PM. No cover. For more info call 745-1400.

Friday, March 23 is the People’s Choice Voting and preview party for BARKITECTURE IV. Beginning at 5:30 PM you can view the terrific and creative Animal habitats from dog houses, cat condos, to bird and reptile habitats created by business in the Benicia/Vallejo area. General admission is $15 per person and you get to vote for your favorite habitat. All proceeds go to the BENICA/VALLEJO HUMANE SOCIETY. For more info call 645-7905, ext. 113.

Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 will be the Annual Daffodil Tea at the Captain’s Row Mansions on Mare Island. You will enjoy High Tea with entertainment in beautiful settings . There are seatings at 11:30 Am and 2:30 PM each day. Proceeds go to the CAMPAIGN TO PRESERVEAND RESTORE St. Peter’s Chapel which is truly a historical jewel. Saturday, March 24 WAYBLONDE will be on hand at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREE T CAFÉ. JOANNE WEIL HEALD is the lead singer of the group who’s repertoire is a mixture of old and new Country, bluegrass, folk and Swing styles. They take the stage at 8:00 PM. No cover. Saturday, March 24 the MARK WRIGHT TRIO will be featured at the LISTEN AND BE HEARD POETRY CAFÉ in Vallejo. The Trio takes the stage at 9:00 PM. There is a $10 fee. For more info call 554-4550.

Sunday, March 25 is a special four hour seminar at ARTS BENICA on Art Bookmaking. Instructor, RONNA LEON will teach simple booklet structures and show artists how to present their work in novel and intriguing ways. There is a $55 fee and a $10 supply fee. For more info call 747-0131 for more info.

Sunday, March 25 is another Beads and Wine Class at the UPSTAIRS venue at THE FIRST STREET CAFÉ. Under the direction of CAROL LIPWORTH the class will create a wire cuff bracelet for each attendee. Bulk beads, wire, wigjig and tools are provided, but students can upgrade beads at the bead shop prior to the class. Appetizers and wine will also be available to class members. Sunday, March 26 the Playwright’s Theatre takes the stage at the LISTEN AND BE EHARD POETRY CAFÉ. This event is free and open to all. It runs from 7:00 PM through 9:00 PM. Call 554-4540 for more info.

Friday, March 30 you can Meet the Winemakers as the BENICIA LIBRARY FOUNDATION hosts the gathering at the INN AT BENICIA BAY at 5:30 PM. The event will be a benefit for the foundation and will feature CHAD ALEXANDER, BRIAN NUSS and DEBORAH SCHATZLEIN. The admission is $40 per person and appetizers will be served by CHEF NEY. Friday, March 30 is the BARKITECTURE IV Gala and Auction at the USA WORLD CLASSICS EVENT CENTER in Vallejo. General Admission is $50 per person and the dress code is Business Casual. The evening includes catered cuisine, cocktails, silent auction , live auction of the wonderful pet habitats created for the event, a raffle and more. For tickets and info call 645-7905, ext. 113.

March 31 its will be ANTSY MC CLAIN AND THE TRAILER PARK TROUBADOURS at the MAJESTIC THEATRE at 8:00 PM. Just to enjoy this energetic and wonderful performance should be a treat in itself. The added bonus is that the performance is a benefit for the Tech Trek summer program for girls of junior high school age to immerse them in science and math programs. This program is sponsored by the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN and the Benicia/Vallejo Chapter is hosting the event. General admission is only $24. A further note on the ANTSY MC CLAIN AND THE TRAILER PARK TROUBADOURS performance. PIZZA PIRATE has sponsored the cost of the concert so that all the money from the ticket sales can go toward the Tech Trek Program.

Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 Benicia’s historic Downtown Shopping district invites you to come and see “Benicia in Bloom”. After being cooped up with cold and rain it is so nice to get outside again and our local merchants and businesses hold this celebration each spring. Over 75 stores and restaurants participate in this annual celebration. Part of the event will be face painting, a visit by the Easter Bunny, a Blooming Hat Contest, free wildflower seed packets, a doll house exhibit and complimentary flowers. Plus, the merchants have been dressing up the front of their businesses or their window displays with flowers. Many businesses will also have Blooming Specials. The event runs from 10:00 AM through 6:00 PM. For more info call 745-9791.

April 3 is the monthly gathering of the bards at the BENICIA PUBLIC LIBRARY at 7:00 PM. Poets are encouraged to submit poems for the groups new anthology . The event is hosted by Benicia’s Poet Laureate, JOEL FALLON. Call 746-4343 for more info.

April 9 at 1:00 PM the WOMEN’S CLUB OF BENICIA will hold its Community Social Dessert Card Party at the BENICIA SENIOR CENTER. The event is a thank you to the community for its support of the Club for over100 years. There is no admission charge and the entire community is welcomed. April 20 is the BENICIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Annual Golf Tournament. This year the event will be at the EAGLE VINES GOLF CLUB in Napa. If you register before April 1 you get to pay the early Registration fee. The event is limited to 144 golfer so be sure to get your reservations in. Call 745-2120 for more info.

April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate you are invited to the 5th Annual Poet’s Picnic In the Park on Sunday, April 22 at CITY PARK. Open mic sign up begins at 11:00 AM and each poet is invited to read two poems at a time. There will be as many rounds as time allows. The BENICIA HISTORICLA MUSEUM AT THE CAMEL BARNS is looking for cameras for its upcoming exhibit, “The Eye of the Lens” that will be opening April 15th. Do you have unusual cameras hidden in the closet? Perhaps grandma’s old Brownie or an early Polaroid? Give them a call at 745-5435 for more info.

The BENICIA/TULA SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION will be welcoming a school band from Tula over the Fourth of July. The Band will be marching in our parade and staying with people in the community. The Association is looking for sponsors to help defray the cost of bringing the band, instruments, costumes and five chaperones to Benicia. The SC REBELS is an extraordinary team of 15 and 16 year old scholar athletes from Benicia, Vallejo, Fairfield and Vacaville. The team has been playing together since 2003 and are currently ranked #1 in Northern California by the PERFECT GAME USA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. In the Fall of 2006 they qualified to represent California in the national finals in Florida. The group is seeking sponsors to help with the program that lets these college bound kids compete despite their family’s financial position.
