Straight Ahead Jazz and Funk with a Nod to Kung Fu

February 21st, 2007 by martha mims · No Comments

The sound of the [tag]Justin Hellman Trio[/tag] has evolved over time. Bassist Justin Hellman and guitarist Eric Vogler have been creating, performing, and arranging together for several years, developing an approach that is exciting and fresh while rooted in the jazz tradition. With influences like Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, and Wayne Shorter, the group strives for a dynamic sound that carries a great deal of tension and release yet also possesses an element of lyricism.

They are a band with two names, the Justin Hellman Trio if it?s a venue looking for straight ahead jazz, or Monkey Knife Fight, if it?s venue for a more funk/fusion kind of sound. When we listened to the CD it went to the top of the pile for both styles. Here at Listen & Be Heard Poetry Caf? we want it all. So when they come to Vallejo for their night to shine, it will be both the Justin Hellman Trio and Monkey Knife Fight. That will be on Saturday Feb. 24, 9pm-Midnight. $10 admission. Please leave your moonshucks at home…
