Gearing Up For The Big Red V-Day

THE BENICIA MAIN STREET PROGRAMS SEES CANDIES STORE is ready for Valentines with Chocolate hearts and delights of all kinds. There is also a new shipment of sweatshirts, and tees for those sweethearts who would rather not have chocolate. Dont forget those DOWNTOWN DOLLARS, they are $20 gift certificates useable in most downtown establishments and $1from each certificate goes toward downtown revitalization. For other sweet treats we now have ROSANNAS EUROPEAN DELIGHTS on Military East (across for Big O). Yes, that is a real bakery right here in river city. She is open Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 AM through 6:00 PM. Saturdays from 7:30 AM through 6:00 PM and on Sundays she will be open from 7:30 PM through 2:00 PM. Friday, February 9 it is Love and Laughter as the BENICIA MAIN STREET PROGRAM brings us its 13th Valentine Auction. The evening begins at 6:00 PM with a no host bar, and the evening includes an appetizer and dessert buffet, Comedian DAVE BURLEIGH, Silent and live Auctions. February 10 and 11 you have a wonderful and rare opportunity to experience the Winter Quarters Conference of the NATIONAL CIVIL WAR ASSOCIATION at the BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM AT THE CAMEL BARNS. Members of the Association will be in period costume and will offer classes and demonstrations on conditions of the time. Some of the demonstrations include photographic processes, , sewing machine technology, cooking, table setting, construction processes, reproduction of gowns and bonnets of the era as well as aspects of basic infantry, cavalry, and artillery, camp management, and Army posts of the Bay Area. February 11 is the Gala Opening of VALLEJO MUSIC THEATRE production of Sophisticated Ladies at the FETTERLY PLAYHOUSE FOR THE ARTS. Doors open at 2:00 PM with wine tasting and a silent auction. Sunday, February 11 KATHY KEITH of Sacramento Valley and JOYCE ODAM who is on the editorial board of California Quarterly will be the featured poets at the Monthly Poetry Reading at the VALONA DELI in Crockett. Poets from the Greater Bay Area gather to enjoy and share. There is an open mic after the featured poets. The poets gather at 4:00 PM. Tuesday, February 13 in the kitchen (downstairs at CITY HALL) there will be a Silent Cake Auction from 9:30 AM through 12:30 PM. The cakes are baked and donated by Cancer survivors and will be available for viewing from 9:30-12:15. At 12:30 the highest bids will be announced. Proceeds will go to THE WELLNESS COMMUNITY. JENNY BEAUMONT, GINA ELECCION and COLLEEN WILLIAMS will be taking part in the Strides for Hope Marathon team participating in the Giants Marathon to raise money for THE WELLNESS COMMUNITY. Thursday, February 15 the AAUW will welcome guest speaker TRISH THORNTON, Command Chief Master Sergeant. She is the highest ranking enlisted female at the 349th Air Mobility Wing which is the reserve wing at Travis Air Force Base. She will be discussing Strategy for Personal Power The meeting will be held in the Community Room at the SOUTHAMPTON SWIM CLUB at the corner of Chelsea Hill and Warwick Drives at 6:30 PM. Saturday, February 24 is the 16th Annual Trivia Bee at the BDES HALL on West J Street. This unusual event is a fund raiser for the Adult Literacy and ESL Programs at the BENICIA PUBLIC LIBRARY. There will be a catered dinner, auction, raffle and of course, the trivia competition. The theme this year is the Summer of Love so grab your favorite Hip attire and come join the fun. Sunday, February 25 ARC-SOLANO will host its Silver or 25th Evening at the Academy Awards Gala at the USA WORLD CLASSICS EVENT CENTER in Vallejo. This wonderful event is sold out each year so be sure to get your reservations in early. The evening includes a catered buffet dinner, silent and live auctions, a raffle, and the Awards ceremony on big screen TVs throughout the event. Tech Trek is a summer program for girls of Junior High school age that immerses them in science and math to prepare them to be more competitive in todays college admissions. ARTS BENICIA has an ongoing Tuesday night Figure Drawing Studio. Artists can join for a monthly fee or a drop in fee. You must bring all your own materials. Artists are welcomed to challenge their drawing skills while developing a better understanding of human form and movement.
