This weekend Vallejo was the scene of two artists’ events. One was an informal open studio by Barry Baldwin, a sculptor from Staffordshire, England who uses a combination of classical sculpting techniques and taking molds off of models. He forms whimsical art pieces with titles like “English Girl (Doesn’t Love Us Any More)” and “Lost Angeles.” Mr. Baldwin opened his studio so that people could get a feel for what it takes to create his work. The surprisingly small studio was filled with works in progress as well as many finished pieces, along with the molds and small “sketches” that he uses to flesh out the full sized sculptures.
The other event was an unveiling of a new stained glass piece by Jackson Jean; this forty-two inch round rose window is called “Eye of Beholder,” weighs approximately 47lbs and has 1600 pieces.
Jackson whose studio is on the corner of Florida and El Dorado invited local artist and friends this last Sunday to share this labor of love, that had the artist working feverishly 12 hour days for the last 3 weeks in a spurt of inspiration. As usual my words do not do this work justice and my photos here only slightly better. Both Artist welcome visits by the public you can contact Barry Baldwin at barry@baldwinsculptor.com and Jackson Jean at: 707-297-1243. Tell them SNJ sent you.
