Pink is not the color associated with good food or service, but the Butter Cream Bakery makes this color go with both. The trademark pink and white stripes on the exterior are not only eye-catching, but welcoming. Inside servers wearing pink aprons take care of many hungry customers.
To get to the dining area, you have to walk past the bakery display cabinets. Maple bars, apple fritters, champagne cake, cookies are just a few of the tempting items. The smell of warm sugar floats in the air.
Pink and sweet pastries may evoke the image of some sort of little girl fantasy. The Butter Cream is not that. It is a working diner. Signs warn that ?Harassing the cook results in smaller portions.? The ?No Whine Zone? starts at 7 a.m. One of the most amazing shows to watch is the cooks at the grill and there is a long counter with seats to do just that.
Most importantly, the food is good. We had ham and eggs with hash browns, and a Poacher plate, poached eggs on spinach and dark rye bread with home fries and gravy. The eggs were cooked as ordered, the whites of the poached eggs was firm, the yolks runny, and there wasn?t a lot of extra water on the plate. The gravy was rich and creamy. Our waitress was very friendly and took our order efficiently. There was some confusion about where food should be delivered, but we, and everyone around us, was relaxed and helped whoever brought the plates out to find the correct customer.
One of the most impressive things about the Butter Cream Bakery is its cleanliness. Despite doing a booming business of both locals and tourists, the dining area is sparkling clean. The retro d?cor includes many period details lovingly cared for. The food is not drenched in grease or sitting in pools of butter as may be expected at a diner, but looks clean on the plate.
The Butter Cream Bakery was started by David and Bobbi Close in 1948. The building was restored in 2001 with help from their son. The paintings and photos on the wall celebrate the long history of this business. The Butter Cream is also known for giving back to the community.
The diner supposedly gets very busy on weekends. It helps to know this in advance and come prepared.
