if you couldn’t see the thread
she was hanging by it would
seem like magic seeing the
white spider descend into
a deep, deep hole as if she
were spiraling downward in
a slow motion spectacle

of plunging into the depths.
what did she want to see there
in the bowels of the earth?
maybe just how far a man
would go and why he would go
digging down below surface
realities to find gold.

she knew the answers before
she even left her cave but
not the expression of his
eyes, or if he would be hot
or in a cold sweat of fear.
then the lights went out. she heard
a heart beat, could’ve been hers.
