New Neighbor

May 17th, 2006 by lanora scott · No Comments

For anyone who lives or shops near the top of Springs Road, there is a new neighborhood restaurant with big ambitions. [tag]Momo?s[/tag] at 2621 Springs Road is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My dining partner and I stopped one day for lunch and found the restaurant nearly empty. This did not reflect the quality of the food. The bacon cheeseburger was the classic American burger. The cheese was melted, the meat cooked thoroughly, the bun warm with a slather of mayonnaise. It came with a choice of cole slaw, potato salad, or French fries. The fries were a disappointment. They arrived warm, but were some sort of processed mashed potatoes formed into the shape of fries.

We also tried the chicken fajita salad. This was an enormous bowl of chopped romaine with black beans mixed in, fried tortillas chopped into small strips, a spiced chicken breast, sour cream and guacamole on top. Fortunately the dressing came on the side; it would not have been my choice. This was accompanied by surprisingly beautiful garlic bread topped with butter, garlic and herbs.

Our waitress, Eva, told us that she, her brother and her cousins had a restaurant in South San Francisco for four years, but grew tired of commuting. They were glad to work close to home. Momo?s opened in what used to be a Thai restaurant in January. The menu holders still say the name of this Thai restaurant. I imagine that the d?cor and menu holders will become more personalized the longer the new owners stay.

The breakfast menu is extensive with many egg dishes that come with fresh country potatoes, and a choice of toast or pancakes, and a variety of meats, ham, bacon, sausage, or steak, ($7.00 to $10.75), pancakes, French toast, and Belgian waffles ($5 to $7.50).

Lunch includes many other grilled sandwiches including a Reuben and a tuna melt, and salads ($7 to $9.75), as well as some Mexican specialties like beef or chicken fajitas, burritos and quesadillas.

The most exciting menu is the dinner selection. While everything is homey, the variety shows imagination. There is a New York Steak grilled with onions, peppers, and mushrooms, served with a choice of French fries or rice, and fresh vegetables ($10.75), Fried Chicken ($8.00), Carne Asada, served with avocado sour cream, rice and beans ($8.00), Greek Chicken, accompanied with a green salad and roasted potatoes ($8.50), and a Garden Penne Pasta, with fresh vegetables in a choice of marinara or alfredo sauce($9.75).

Beverages are limited to soft drinks, juice, tea or coffee. There was no mention of dessert, but plans for that may be in the future.

Momo?s is a great neighborhood place that deserves support. Any unevenness in quality or service due to the size of the place and the large menu will be worked out in time.
